If you’re still feeling the love – and the extra pounds from a Valentine’s day feast, then it’s time to grab Fido, the leash, the ball and head out to your favourite beach for a bit of sunshine, fresh air and exercise.

Don’t know where to go?
Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of dog-friendly beaches where you and your best buddy can have the time of your life. You’re welcome.

Cape Town & Surrounds:
Clifton 1st Beach: the best thing about this beach is that Fido can be his best self and run leash free.
Longbeach Noordhoek/Kommetjie: A gorgeous 8km stretch of beach running from Kommetjie to Noordhoek, these powdery white sands are a favourite with surfers, dog walkers and horse riders alike. Dogs are welcome off-leash, but do watch out for the horses.
Sunset Beach, Milnerton: Not only do you get a great stretch of beach for Fido to run free, but the views are unsurpassed, so don’t forget your camera.

Durban:
Brighton Beach: a great spot for swimming, surfing and dog walking where your dog can run free.
Umhlanga: Dogs are allowed on the north end of this beautiful beach, on-leash only.
Trafalgar Beach: This Blue Flag status beach on the south coast is the perfect place to walk Fido off-leash, with it’s warm water, stunning scenery and, most importantly, cleanliness.

Port Elizabeth:
PE has very strict rules regarding dogs on public beaches, so Fido needs to be on a leash at all times, and you have to adhere to the designated areas.
Wells Estate Beach: Blue Flag Status means dogs are only allowed on the cycle way and at the back of the dunes.
Kings Beach: Dogs are only allowed on the grassed areas but this beautiful beach is well worth a visit.
Blue Horizon Bay: Situated between Port Elizabeth and Jeffrey’s Bay, Blue Horizon Bay is home to a number of beaches where Fido can be walked, providing you stay outside the bathing areas.
