1. General
- MediPet is short-term, non-life pet insurance cover. (This is not life insurance, nor medical aid for your pet.)
- Premiums are subject to review & change at any time.
- All cover is reviewed annually.
- You will be provided with 31 days’ notice of all changes.
- Submission of an online application is not a request for a quote, & constitutes acceptance of these conditions.
2. Payments
- Monthly premiums are automatically debited on the evening of the 1st of the month via debit order. Policyholders may contact us to request a debit order date of the 7th or 15th of the month. Should your elected debit date fall on a weekend or public holiday, collection will be on the next working day.
- Annual payments are payable in advance via EFT for the following 12 months.
- If cover is accepted by both parties it will be backdated to reflect the date the application was submitted as the start date.
- If you join during the course of a month, & are a monthly-payment member, the first month’s premium due by debit order at the beginning of the following month will include a pro-rata amount for what is left of the current month.
- Pro-rata monthly payments do not apply to annual payment members & they will be advised separately of the amount & details of the EFT transfer required for the following 12 months of cover.
- If debit order payments are unsuccessful, no claims during this period will be paid. You have 15 days from the date the payment was due to make payment for continuous cover, subject to underwriter’s approval.
- All cover will automatically lapse after 15 days, should premiums not be paid.
3. Waiting periods
- Accident-related claims on all plans are covered immediately, from the start date.
- Accident plan has no waiting periods.
- There is a 30-day no-claims period on Lite, Essential & Ultimate360 plans.
- This is followed by a 30-day 50% co-payment period on Essential & Ultimate plans (day 31 – 60 of cover).
- There is a 6-month waiting period on Essential & Ultimate360 plans for knee, hip, elbow & shoulder, eye, respiratory system & spinal treatments. If one of these conditions are diagnosed in this 6-month waiting period, the diagnostic cover will be limited to R5 000. Pets under 4 months of age may be considered for part or full cover of the above treatments, on a case-by-case basis.
- Prescription food, sterilisation & dental care benefits on Ultimate360 plan have a 4-month waiting period.
- The cremation contribution on Ultimate360 plan has a 6-month waiting period, & will not be covered if it is a result of any pre-existing conditions.
- Routine care add-on claims have a 30-day waiting period.
- Signs or symptoms of any condition prior to joining may be deemed a ‘pre-existing condition.’ These may not be covered on Accident, Essential & Ultimate360 plans moving forward. They will not be covered on Lite plan, unless pre-existing condition cover was selected on joining. (All pets requiring medical attention must immediately be seen by a vet, even if during a waiting period.)
4. Chronic care support add-ons
- Treatments after 3 months (or longer) for the same condition no longer fall under short-term, non-life cover. Should this happen to your pet, we will offer you the opportunity to change your cover, by adding a chronic care support plan add-on in order to be able to continue claiming for it. Should you accept this, it will be added to your cover & there will be an addition to your premium accordingly.
- If you decline the addition of a chronic care support add-on, you will not be able to claim for this condition until the next policy year. Each policy year you may claim for up to 3 (non-consecutive) months for the same condition under your general plan cover.
- Each case is reviewed individually.
5. Disclosure
- Full disclosure of medical history on joining Lite (without pre-existing condition cover selected), Essential & Ultimate360 plans is vital.
- Not doing so could compromise your cover.
- This could mean exclusions or additional waiting periods applied to certain conditions. Non-disclosure could also lead to cancellation of your policy at any time.
6. Cancellation
- Should you choose to cancel your cover within the first 14 days (this is called ‘the cooling-off period’), you will be given a full refund of premium(s) paid. After this period lapses, a calendar month notice period is required. Annual payment members cancelling will be refunded premiums pro-rata.
7. Communication
- Email is our primary method of communicating. If an email is not returned as undelivered, we deem it received. Should your email address change, it is important to update this information with us in writing.
