What Should You Bring When Checking Into A Doggy Daycare in Cape Town?
Let’s help you ensure that your dog has everything they need for a comfortable, enjoyable stay. Most Cape Town doggy daycares recommend bringing:
- Your dog’s regular food in pre-measured portions, clearly labelled with their name & feeding instructions
- Some daycares request enough food for the day, plus a little extra in case of extended stays.
- Any medications your dog might need during their stay, with clear written instructions about dosages & timing
- Some doggy day cares might encourage you to bring a familiar blanket, bed or toy to help your dog feel secure. Other facilities may discourage personal items from home as they may encourage possessive or territorial behaviour & items are often left behind.
- Your dog’s leash & collar with updated ID tags
- A copy of updated vaccination records
- Emergency contact information, including your vet’s details
- Any special treats your dog particularly enjoys (if allowed by the facility)
- Details about any dietary restrictions, allergies, or behavioural quirks
- Poop bags for arrival & departure, however, most facilities should provide these during the stay
Most Cape Town daycares are well-prepared for daytime stays. Many facilities keep a supply of quality dog food on hand for emergencies, offer spare blankets & bedding, & stock first aid supplies for minor issues.
When Can Puppies Start Going To Doggy Daycare?
Most doggy daycares across Cape Town welcome puppies from around 12 weeks of age, provided they’ve completed their full vaccination schedule & have had all three rounds of core vaccinations. This typically includes vaccines for parvovirus, leptospirosis, distemper, & infectious canine hepatitis, which are essential before your puppy plays with other dogs. No daycare will accept dogs without a bordetella vaccination.
While most Cape Town daycares require adult dogs to be spayed or neutered (typically for dogs over 6 months), puppies younger than this are usually exempt from this requirement. Some facilities may implement special monitoring during your puppy’s stay if they haven’t been neutered yet.
It’s always best to contact your chosen daycare directly or thoroughly review their website to confirm their specific age requirements & vaccination policies before enrolling your puppy. Some Cape Town daycares even offer “meet & greet” sessions or “trial days” to ensure your puppy is comfortable in their environment before committing to regular attendance.
